Tape Measurement Tips:
Neck: Measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple), with tape sloping slightly downward.
Waist (Men): Measure horizontally around the abdomen directly at the navel.
Waist (Women): Measure at the narrowest point of the torso (natural waist).
Hips (Women): Measure around the widest part of the buttocks/hips.

How the U.S. Navy Method Works

Developed by researchers Hodgdon and Beckett at the Naval Health Research Center in 1984, the U.S. Navy Circumference Method evaluates body fat percentage using key geometric body tape measurements. Because adipose tissue deposits disproportionately along the waist and hips relative to the neck, the logarithmic ratio between these points provides a remarkably accurate approximation of body density ($D_B$).

The Siri equation is then utilized to convert body density into body fat percentage: % BF = (495 ÷ Body Density) - 450.

Why Body Fat % Beats BMI for Lifters and Athletes

While Body Mass Index (BMI) evaluates only height and scale weight, it fails to differentiate between 10 lbs of dense contractile muscle tissue and 10 lbs of adipose fat. By calculating your Lean Body Mass (LBM), you can accurately track whether a caloric deficit is burning pure fat or depleting valuable muscle tissue.
